Specialist TMJ care, led by Helen Cowgill
Helen Cowgill is a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist with more than 10 years’ experience and extensive postgraduate training in temporomandibular dysfunction.
Clinical experience
Helen graduated from St George’s Medical School with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and has completed extensive postgraduate training, particularly in the management of TMJ dysfunction. Her work has included the NHS, private practice, a Premiership football club, a Superleague netball team, international athletics and the Physiotherapy team to the Olympic Equestrian Teams at the London Olympics.
Helen currently works within the NHS at King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust as a Clinical Lead Physiotherapist. She was fundamental in setting up a pioneering TMJ multidisciplinary team clinic there. Data from that clinic highlighted the importance of dedicated specialist physiotherapy management, and Helen presented the clinic’s outcomes at the national Physiotherapy UK conference in 2013.
Specialist focus and education
TMJ disorders are not routinely taught in undergraduate physiotherapy education and are considered a specialist area. Helen has extensive experience managing TMJ disorders in NHS and private practice, and is passionate about treatment and education.
She has published in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the private physiotherapy journal In Touch. Helen has also delivered postgraduate lectures about physiotherapy input and management for TMD, and has lectured on postgraduate TMJ courses.
Professional memberships
Helen’s professional memberships include the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists, the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute and the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.
